The public_html folder is normally the main web root for your hosting account. Files placed inside this folder can be served publicly through your domain name.
What belongs in public_html?
- Your main website files.
- WordPress files such as wp-config.php, wp-content and wp-admin.
- Static HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images.
- Application files intended to be public.
What should not be placed there?
- Private backups.
- Database exports containing customer data.
- Password files.
- Internal notes or sensitive documents.
- Old malware-cleanup copies.
Common issue
If a website is uploaded into the wrong directory, the domain may show a blank page, directory listing, old website or default page. Always confirm the correct document root before uploading files.
Security note
Anything placed inside public_html should be treated as potentially public unless protected by server rules. Do not store sensitive data there unless you fully understand the risks.
