WHM and cPanel are related but they are not the same thing. cPanel is normally used to manage an individual hosting account. WHM is used to manage multiple cPanel accounts, packages, DNS zones and server-level or reseller-level settings.
cPanel is for individual accounts
Customers use cPanel to manage website files, email accounts, databases, SSL certificates, domains and backups for one hosting account.
WHM is for account management
WHM is used by resellers, server administrators and managed hosting providers to create, suspend, modify and manage cPanel accounts.
Common WHM tasks
- Create cPanel accounts.
- Create hosting packages.
- Reset cPanel passwords.
- Modify quotas.
- Suspend or unsuspend accounts.
- Manage DNS zones.
- Review account bandwidth and resource usage.
Root WHM
Root WHM has deeper server-wide access. It should only be used by trusted administrators because mistakes can affect every account on the server.
