The WHM mail queue shows messages waiting to be delivered by the server mail system. Messages can queue for normal reasons, but a large or fast-growing queue can indicate spam, authentication problems, DNS issues or a remote mail provider rejecting messages.
Common reasons mail queues
- Remote server temporarily unavailable.
- Recipient mailbox full.
- DNS resolution problems.
- Outgoing spam from a compromised account.
- Rate limiting from large mail providers.
- Incorrect mail routing.
What to look for
- Large numbers of messages from one account.
- Repeated failures to the same provider.
- Suspicious subjects or recipients.
- Messages from scripts rather than real mailboxes.
- Deferred messages with reputation or blacklist errors.
Security warning
If a queue contains thousands of messages from one account, investigate before simply forcing delivery. Sending a large spam queue can damage server reputation.
